Locating the birds Cage

Parrots are very social birds and should always be in areas of social activity. They particularly love to be around areas where human spend most of their time. If most of your time is spent in the family room then the bird cage should be located there. Parrots also need to have rest periods so the bird cage should not be located in an area that is always busy and never quite. You should never place the parrot in an environment that there is never a quiet time as they need sleep period’s time each day. Having a sleeping bird cage is a good idea if need be to insure the parrot has a sleeping area. It is also a good idea to have a few stands and play gyms in areas frequented by family members

I do not recommend you keep parrots in a special room for birds to avoid the sometimes annoying chatter of the parrot. Many parrots will simply become louder and louder to be in the social setting they are being isolated from. They really must be part of what is going on and will become louder and even scream loudly to gain the attention they desire. If a parrot sends out contact calling and receives no response then they simply call out louder in an attempt to be noticed.

When parrots are involved in everyday life with people around them they develop a healthy social being. If they are not receiving responses when they send out a call, or are not sufficiently involved in activates, the parrot will send out a louder message expecting a response. This response from a human reassures the parrot that it is part of the family so to speak. It is, however, important also that the location of the bird cage is not in a chaotic location. While some parrots enjoy a lot of activity others may be upset with the constant actions of children constantly running back and forth, or dogs barking, or the noise of a loud radio always on. This activity is ok but not in a constant sense, some quiet time is also necessary.Placing a bird cage by a window is desirable for a parrot as it gives the bird an alternative view to keep it occupied during periods when people are not around. If you notice a parrot excessively “picking feathers” or exhibiting fear like symptoms it is an indication of the bird cage being in an area that is too stressful for the bird. This could be due to unexpected loud noises such as loud radios or televisions too close to the bird cage or even children yelling or screaming while playing around the bird cage too loudly. Bird cages should not be located near windows with loud noise levels or any other heavy equipment that may cause vibrations constantly in the area as this also is stressful for the parrot.

The bird cage should be located in a reasonably draft free location and not be placed in the path of heat vents or air conditioning vents or in an area with very intense direct sunlight. Room temperature should be between 55°F to 90°F degrees with the temperature of the room NOT changing to quickly. It is desirable to maintain a constant the temperature to keep your parrot healthy. The parrot can sustain temperatures above and below the 55° to 90° range if the transition is made slowly over a period of time. Higher temperatures might require a soft shower spray to allow the parrot to cool sufficiently.

Parrots love to chew on anything within it’s range so place all bird cages and bird stands out of range of anything you do not want chewed with the parrots strong beak. Parrots can not resist chewing on wood whether it is a window frame or an expensive cabinet, if the parrot can reach something they will chew on it.

Caution should be used if a bird cage is in a kitchen especially with gas stoves. Most cooking utensils with non stick coatings are toxic to birds especially fumes from anything burning such as any plastics that may accidentally overheat or burn.

You should avoid smoking around the bird cage of a parrot or anywhere close to the bird as cigarette smoke is highly toxic to them. Even nicotine on your fingers from cigarettes can harm your parrot and MUST be avoided at all times. If you smoke you must wash your hands carefully and even change your clothes before handling your parrot to protect it from this exposure.
